Changes to Waste Services FAQs
When does the new kerbside rubbish and recycling wheelie bin service start?
1 July 2024. Bins will start being delivered from March 2024, but won’t be able to be used until 1 July.
When will I get my wheelie bins?
Bins (one for rubbish and one for recycling – your existing recycling crate will be used for glass only in future) will start being delivered from March 2024, but you won’t be able to use them until the kerbside service starts on 1 July.
How can I find out whether my house is included in the proposed expanded kerbside collection service?
What day will my wheelie bin be collected from the kerbside?
Will the glass only crate (the existing recycling crate) be collected on the same day as the recycling wheelie bin?
Yes.
Why can’t glass go in my recycling wheelie bin?
Mixing glass with other recycling results in a contaminated product that is difficult to separate without significant additional cost. Keeping the glass separate ensures an overall cleaner recycling stream.
How will the expanded kerbside collection service be funded?
The service will be paid for via a targeted rate.
This means that only households in the area of service are charged. This is a separate charge from other rates and will be listed on future rating statements as Kerbside Rubbish and Recycling Charge.
How is the targeted rate calculated?
The calculation of the targeted rate includes all costs associated with the service and is divided by the number of households within the area of service. This ensures that all households within the area of service pay the same amount.
Can I opt out of the service?
No, there is no opt out option for services provided through a targeted rate.
How long can I use my supply of rubbish bags?
Until they run out but note from 1 July 2024 they will not be collected from the kerbside but will continue to be accepted at transfer stations, the Waste Sorting Centre or the Resource Recovery Centre.
How long can I buy rubbish bags?
Council has a limited supply and will sell them until supplies are exhausted.
Is there an end date for redeeming rubbish bag vouchers and getting a rebate?
Yes – 30 June 2024 is the end date for both.
Can I change my wheelie bin size?
Yes depending on circumstances.

How do I get rid of green waste?
Council encourages people to compost at home if possible. Otherwise you can take green waste to the facility in Blenheim and Picton (there is a charge for this). There are also a number of private collectors who will pick up green waste from your property for a monthly fee.
What happens if my bin gets damaged/broken/lost?
All wheelie bins will be numbered. If a wheelie bin is damaged/broken or lost there will be a function on the website customers can use to report this or contact Council.
